  • The purely optogenetic systems for behaving animals consist of a controlled light source, a light delivery fiber-optic patch cords, and a Fiber-optic Cannula. An additional connectorised Fiber-optic Rotary Joint can be add if the system is used on freely moving animals, to transfer the light signals and prevents the twisting of a fiber-optic tether.
The type of the optogenetic system depends on the kinds of opsins, the number of brain sites and the type of illumination.

The number of brain site depend of the experiment. In the case you choose More than 2 sites on the animal, prefer the 1 site option and a change in the fiber optic patchcord for a Bundle fiber optic patchcord.

The second option to choose is the Light source or the Light sources. By default, we present systems with a blue light source typically use for ChR2 opsin, but other wavelength could be used for other opsin. Do not hesitate to mention the wavelength needed in the comment of your request.
The other choice is LED or LD (laser diode) to make the illumination. Both have advantages and cons but the most important of them are:
    - LD has a higher power by surface ratio but less output light angle (NA)
    - LED are more uniform and do not present speckle profiles like the LD

LED (NA 0.63) LD (NA 0.22)
    Uniform Speckle

For optogenetic applications, the LISER light source is the most versatile one that delivers sufficient power levels of blue or yellow incoherent light for all multi-mode optical fibers.
If the light source need to be compatible with photometry system, it is preferable to chose LED light source which are also used in fiber photometry systems.
