  • The FiWi Cannulas for chronic implantation into an animal's brain exist in Optoelectric, Opto, Ephys, or Test variety.

The bottom of a FiWi Optoelectric cannula consists of an optical fiber and 1 to 4 electrodes. The optical fiber glued to an LED illuminates a selected brain area, and electrodes record the area's brain activity. The LED light intensity pulse could be modulated from 0-100%. Its frequency can be varied from continuous wave (CW) up to 1 kHz. The optical fiber and the electrodes can be custom-positioned with 100 µm precision. The tungsten electrode impedance could be set between 0.2 and 1.2 MΩ.
FiWi Opto Cannula has a LED glued to a protruding optical fiber. At the same time, FiWi Ephys Cannula features only electrodes. The FiWi Test Cannula is a robust version of the FiWi Opto Cannula with a larger diameter, short optical fiber used to verify the position of the illumination pattern before implanting the fragile Opto Cannula.
At the top of the cannula is an electrical connector for attaching or disconnecting the headstage between the experiments.
